About me
Eva Nonna SEDERSTAM is a Franco-Finnish artist working in the Avignon region of Provence since 2002. She explores her poetic vision of the world by opening metaphorical windows based on the impressions she gathers during her travels and in the midst of nature. She draws on the cross-disciplinary nature of the arts: dance, song, rhythms, words and resonance organize her quest for beauty and serene harmony. Like the playful dolphin that breathes in the light and then dives into the depths of the water, she gathers her sensory experiences in the course of life before entering the dream world within her studio. Driven by her intuition, she takes a transformative step sideways into the sensitive. Her work follows the curves of this alternation, swimming between conscious experience and intuitive emergence.
Mainly using paper as a support, she chooses it for its various qualities: rag, mulberry, rice, thickness, transparency, absorption. In recent years, she has opted for small formats, seeking lightness and intimacy with her work. She works with backgrounds to integrate an atmosphere that can be abstract or figurative. Color and tools are important: gouache, inks, felt-tip pens, tempera pigments, as well as brushes, block prints, collage and assemblages serve her mode of expression. Touches of gold leaf add refinement, delicacy and light. She likes to work on several series at the same time. There were the “Broderies” on mulberry and rice paper against a background of Japanese marbling with gouache and gold leaf, then the “Jardins”, also inspired by textiles but using printing. The “Sentiers de traverses” are the result of impressions made during her strolls.
Eva Nonna SEDERSTAM speaks of the existence of a more sensitive space of reality, opening onto an in-between world. There is what is visible in reality, and there is the state afterwards: the concrete experience of vibration, always in motion, always in music. She seeks to create a powerful yet subtle reading from which emanates serenity, beauty, strolling and questioning. Her artistic line is a reflection of her personality. She needs calm and silence, nature and time. She loves to wander and let herself be impregnated. She feels that metaphor is more apt than direct speech to express a more complex and vivid truth. This is the particularity of her artistic approach, which lies in her perception of aspects of reality that pass through the sieve of the body's sensitivity and lead her intuition. She creates an unreal reality. There is always a beginning to the story, followed by a peaceful wandering into the inner world, both her own and that of the viewer who wishes to take part in the exercise. Her style is neither completely abstract nor truly figurative. For her, the abstract tends towards the evocative, and the figurative towards the unreal, the shifted; the image abstracts itself from reality in favor of narrative. The common features of her work are poetry and musicality: she seeks harmony, rhythm, melody, gesture and dance. She likes a story to be born, a process to be set in motion. She loves it when a story is born, when a process is set in motion, when the reverberation of the work speaks to the soul.
